What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My process is understanding their process.
I like to communicate with my students and find out what aspects of English writing they enjoy and dislike. Then I work with them to focus on what they enjoy and turn what they dislike into what they understand.
I find that most students struggle or resent writing because they don't understand it. The secret to understanding writing is to apply it personally.
With this philosophy in mind, I will work with students on improving grammar and persuasion. Depending on the specific needs of the student, we can work on editing papers for classes they are enrolled in, or I can assign engaging homework that encourages the student to find their personal voice.
Most importantly, however, I am adaptable and wish to work with the student and parent/guardian on developing the perfect educational process for them.
At this time, due to time constraints, I am unable to develop an entire curriculum for a student. Ideally, I can help a student with their outside classes and can optionally assign light homework.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone who is interested in your individual learning style. Learning is a personal process that happens uniquely for each individual. A tutor's teaching style should either align or adapt to what helps you learn best.
