About

Educational Philosophy

There is a quote that reads, “Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” This quote embodies my belief that all children are inherently intelligent and have a variety of ways in which they learn. Therefore, I desire to use flexible methods and curricula designed to be individualized so that every child receives the support they need to learn and experience their world.

All children deserve a place to be with their peers, and my classroom community will reflect that. I will engage children and leverage our environment to create a space where students feel safe to learn and excel. I will do this by including diverse books in my classroom library and building inclusive curricula and practices in the classroom.

I acknowledge that there are bound to be instances of conflict within the school environment. However, I believe that every child is unique with thoughts, feelings, and logic, and I know that they need help finding the right ways to express these thoughts and feelings to others. I believe that allowing children to express themselves begins with teaching them physical and emotional self-regulation tools. By modeling calming methods such as deep breathing and taking time away, I will encourage children to think for themselves and decide what they need to feel supported.

In conclusion, my ultimate goal as a teacher is to provide students with culturally responsive and individualized instruction that allows each student to reach their full potential. I will be a resource to students and families to create a community in which all voices are heard and all are part of each student’s success team. My goal is to lead children to be their best so that I, and they, can leave the world a better place than we found it.

Frequently asked questions

As someone who employs culturally responsive tutoring techniques, the first thing I want to do is talk to the student to figure out why they signed up for tutoring, what their goals are, and how I fit into those. Students who are reluctant to talk about their reasons or don't have goals will spend a little more time helping them craft goals together, so we come up with a game plan.

The first session will be more like an interview, where we review student work, learn each other, and answer other questions and address concerns.

I currently have my Master's degree in Teaching (with my teaching credential) in multiple subjects from the University of La Verne. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA and am teaching full-time at a charter school in the Los Angeles area.

Additionally, I have 21 ECE (early childhood education) credits from the College of the Canyons (also with a 4.0 GPA) and spent one year teaching English in Japan to students from 18 months to 92 years old.

I currently charge $70 per hour of tutoring for a once weekly session. Setting up multiple days a week of tutoring will provide a discount for your hourly rate.

On December 12, 2014, my life changed forever when I packed my life into two suitcases and a carry-on and moved across the world to teach English in Japan. While there, I taught a group of third-graders who changed my life. After my first lesson, I knew I'd found my passion. Watching the person across from you understand and knowing you created that moment of learning together is one of my most rewarding feelings.

When I returned to the U.S., I knew I was supposed to teach. Now, after partnering with the University of La Verne's La Fetra College of Education, I have completed my Master of Arts in Teaching with a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential to fulfill this purpose.

I have worked with college students as a peer tutor, as well as English learners from ages 18 months to 92 years (with varying levels of experience and exposure to English).
