About
I am a qualified secondary school Spanish and French teacher. I hold a B.A. in Spanish and French from the University of California at Riverside, as well as Certificates of Proficiency in Spanish, French, and Italian. I have been a high school teacher and private tutor for 12 years. My students describe me as knowledgeable, perceptive, organized and fun. Each student I work with will have an individualized lesson plan for their goals as well as monthly progress reports if requested.
I enjoy helping my students work from point to point until they have the "aha!" moment. Many of my students grow a personal relationship with me that last at times more than a decade which is a great honor. I have been told by students that I changed their views on languages, culture and the world of which I am humbled and thankful.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I first meet with my student to understand their goals, language level, and any struggles they have or have had in the past. I review any demonstrable work they have available and then ask about upcoming deadlines or important dates. I then proceed to summarize what I understand, ask for clarifications, then open the session to questions from the student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
B.A. Spanish and French
Certified Teacher Status
Certificate of Proficiency - Spanish
Certificate of Proficiency - French
Certificate of Proficiency - Italian
University Course Study - La Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Chile
Teacher Training - United States Peace Corps, Benin
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I have a standard rate of $50-$60 per hour depending on the type of lessons, preparation time and grading.
If students buy a package of 10 or more lessons then a package rate can be discussed.
How did you get started teaching?
It's in my blood as both of my parents are professors and teachers.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students aging from 3 to 78. I work with students struggling in language class in school, and also taught private lessons from beginner level to advanced. I proofread and help university students prepare bachelor level assignments.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I see some students believe that a native speaker is an ideal choice for a foreign language tutor. I advise against this as the foreign language learning process is something to be trained in and is a specialty. Just because someone speaks a language natively or with their family does not qualify them as a teacher or tutor in that language. A funny side note: native speakers regularly compliment language teachers for "speaking better" then they do!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
If a student is struggling, I recommend that they don't panic and take a pause. Ask themselves if they are tripped up on verbiage and grammar titles, they are afraid of sounding silly, if they have a fear, if they have an insecurity, etc. This helps both the student and I get to the heart of the matter faster and puts the student more at ease because they can put their struggle into words.
