About

With four years of experience teaching middle and high school students, I understand the power and value of a one-on-one learning environment. I bring a variety of modalities into tutoring sessions, meeting the student where they are at and tailoring our time to their needs and learning style. I utilize goal setting, kinesthetic learning, and questioning to achieve results.

I have experience with college applications and essays, resume writing, ACT, and AP exams. Additionally, while my background is in international relations and global health, I am currently pursuing a master's degree in Counseling Psychology and have a certificate in Mental Health First Aid.

My linkedin profile can be accessed at: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brookehein/

I enjoy piecing together the resources a student needs in a way that creates a 'light bulb' moment, an "aha"! That's very rewarding.

Frequently asked questions

I deeply believe in the "reach me before you teach me" philosophy, so I will be seeking to understand the student's learning style, personality, and goals before diving into content. From there, I will experiment with different learning modalities to discover which is most effective in reaching our learning goals, as well as find ways to gamify and introduce joy into our work together. This will involve developing milestones and scaffolds to arrive there.

I have taught both middle and high school students for the last four years throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. This has involved thorough professional development around curriculum building, classroom management, data-driven lesson planning and hands-on learning.

In an effort to support student mental health, I attained a certificate in Mental Health First Aid and believe in educating the whole human.

I am open to negotiation based on time and subject matter. Generally, my rate for 1:1 tutoring falls between $30-50/hour and is online using Zoom, Skype or Facetime (including the use of chat/text/email/google for check ins).

I began teaching at Summit Public Schools in the fall of 2016. My subject matter has revolved around food justice, health, nutrition, wellness, fitness, and cooking.

For the last 2 years, I've managed the Independent Learning Program at Summit. This role has involved supporting 120+ students in finding internships, preparing for college, and developing curriculum for independent study.

The Bay Area is diverse in student body spanning from Richmond to San Jose. I've worked with students ranging from ages 11-18, with various identities, socioeconomic backgrounds, reading and language proficiencies and neurodiversity.

Moving from on-campus learning to virtual school has been a trying yet triumphant experience as a teacher. I feel proud of my ability to adapt to the requirements and challenges of online learning in the face of the global COVID-19 pandemic. In many ways, relationships and learning has deepened, and has better prepared me for the role of tutor.

Advocate for yourself! No one knows you better than YOU. Understand your learning needs and preferences, learning style, and habits so that you can better ask for what you need from your educator(s).
