Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with complicated topics, I will first see what my student understands and then explain things step by step so they can see the whole process. After that, I'll let them go as far as they can before I offer guidance again. My goal is to let them learn and offer the right amount of guidance without doing the work for them.
Once we've completed a problem, I will point out the main steps and help them identify patterns for future problems. This helps my students to quickly grasp the topic and start to make sense of things.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I graduated from Santa Clara University with a BS in Civil Engineering and am currently working as a Traffic Engineer. I also recently passed my Engineering Exam which tested my understanding of math and science.
I am currently tutoring 10 students in math. Ages range from 5 to 18. I've been tutoring for about 5 years now and love it!
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $70/hour for online tutoring. If you'd like to pay for multiple sessions in advance, I can offer a bundle deal.
4 hours for $260
8 hours for $500
How did you get started teaching?
One day, a family friend said their child needed help in Geometry and I thought I would help them out. Little did I know that we would both love the experience that I kept on tutoring over the years. I now tutor 10 students in math!
What types of students have you worked with?
I'm working with some students who are 5-10 years old and are not challenged enough in school so I teach them higher grade level topics. I bring material over and math games to help them grow.
I'm working with several middle schools and high school students to better understand the topics that they are learning. They've found that their teachers aren't able to spend the time and attention with them to properly explain the material. I take time to teach them methods to understand and solve their problems and then have them explain back to me what they've learned.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A student of mine was learning about adding and subtracting negative numbers and wasn't getting the concept. I tried explaining things through something he enjoyed, games! I taught him that negative numbers were like dark characters who have negative health and to defeat them you need to attack them with positive energy. We were standing up and moving and he was immersed in the experience.
It brought such joy to both of us, but I enjoyed seeing him having fun with a topic that he had previously been confused about. Thinking outside the box is something I enjoy doing and it's part of what I love about tutoring.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The advice that I would give is:
- Don't be afraid to make mistakes. This is how we learn. We try out what we know and then we see what needs to be corrected.
- You aren't stupid if you don't get math, it just means that you need to have the concepts you are missing explained to you in a calm and clear way. You may have gaps in your understanding of math that are making current topics harder. If you clear these up, things will become easier.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Some questions I like to ask are:
- What are your struggles with math in?
- When did you start to have struggles with math?
- Do you believe that you can overcome these challenges?
- How long do you want our sessions to be and how many times a week would you like to meet?
I usually recommend sessions of 1.5 hours to really get into the material. If a student is struggling a lot with math, I would recommend 2 sessions a week.
