I have a mix of freelance and volunteer experience as an English and history tutor. I have a BA in international relations. I love discussing history with students, helping them see how trends develop and the past shapes the present. I have taught ESL youth and non-native English speaking university students, as well as helped with SAT prep for native English speaking US high schoolers.
I love discussion with students, especially when it produces that dawning of understanding of a concept. I love seeing skills and command of content improve, and the confidence that inspires in the student. Making the material interesting for students by linking it to both knowledge they already have and to cultural references they are already familar with also makes tutoring especially enjoyable and rewarding.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BA in international relations, a degree that required a heavy load of history courses. I have volunteer tutoring experience with ESL high school and university students, and have volunteered as a literacy tutor with adults.

$30/hr, $20 for the initial meeting.
How did you get started teaching?
I began tutoring on an ad hoc basis with international students I lived with as a college student. I editted their writing and tutored them in spoken English. I also volunteered as a tutor with the International Rescue Committee. More recently I have tutored through other online platforms, while volunteering as a literacy tutor.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?
Evaluate what you are struggling with in studying and comprehending the subject. For history, are you struggling with factual recall, often called "identification"? Understanding a key conceptual term or the broad trends and sequences of events? Tutors can help with each, but the session time is much better spent engaged in discussion of the second aspect of studying history. Look for tutors who can engage in helping you with that second aspect well -- it will also help more with the first aspect.
