About
I am a 6th-year credentialed English teacher that has worked both in public and private schools across the country. I have received my BA from UC Berkeley in English Literature and my MA in Education from Alverno College. I started my career in the public school system in Milwaukee, Wisconsin through the program Teach For America. Through this experience, I learned the foundations of teaching with empathy, rigor, and an attention on individualized education. I have since moved to Sonoma County where I have transitioned into teaching at a small private school that focuses on student-centered, project-based learning.

What I love most about teaching is the ability to problem-solve with students. I believe that some of the most meaningful educational experiences that students have are when they are learning from setbacks. I am passionate about instilling a growth mindset in every student that I work with.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with a new student, I like to start the first tutoring session off with a fun writing assignment or literary-themed game. This not only helps to develop trust between me and the student, but it also serves as a primary assessment that I use to inform my teaching with the student.
I then try to get a sense of what the student's goals are and what they hope to achieve over the course of our time together. Tied into this step is also getting a read on what the student's interests/career goals are. Do they want to become a biochemist? Great! Let's learn how to analyze and evaluate a challenging lab report. Do they wish to get a perfect score on the SAT so they can attend the college of their dreams? Excellent! Let's practice test-taking strategies and engage in timed writing activities.

How did you get started teaching?
I was inspired to become an English teacher by my High School AP Language teacher, Mr. Henry. He embodies what it means to be a kind and helpful educator. He always made an effort to connect with students, while also pushing them to achieve their academic potential. Mr. Henry was an educator in my life that gave me the confidence to pursue my authentic self.
