Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I'd prefer to get to know the student's goals and priorities for the class and for their education or work in general. I value their time and want to optimize all our interactions.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I attended UCLA, UNLV, and USC where I earned a bachelor's degree in psychology then a master's degree in applied psychology. I worked in the field a few years as well as became a credentialed English teacher for the state of California. I have taught at the high school and univeristy level in California and internationally.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I believe $40 per hour is actually belove average, but I don't mind if a psychology student makes me an offer for less. Tutoring is not my primary source of income, but is is a source of revenue as well an enjoyment since I have a great affinity for psychology and getting to teach it.
How did you get started teaching?
I started tutoring students in math while at university, then kept doing it even while working on my main career.
What types of students have you worked with?
Initially I worked with students of all ages, but the last ten years I have focused on high school and college-age students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I am currently taking classes to receive my administrative credential for the state of California, and I really enjoy how much psychology is now being used as part of the curriculm as I feel it has been ignored in the past.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
While a tutor's education and experience are important, their ability to help you learn is more important. So even if someone is less educated, but their communication style really helps you retain information, choose the less educated option.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
It would be nice to be able to define the exact problem you're having in the class. But if not, that is okay - I can help you figure that out too. It is a great help to be able to articulate your challenges and be able to present these, then a good tutor can come up with strategies to overcome the challenges.
