Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I start off with introductions, then I will ask student about their interests, likes and dislikes about school, and how why they think they are struggling in their academics. I also speak to the parents and ask what their goals are for their child while receiving tutoring. I ask if they are on an IEP, 504 plan or Behavior Plan to address those needs as well.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been an elementary special education teacher for 16 years. I have worked as a campus supervisor, Instructional assistant and a leader with tutoring/mentoring programs.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard price is $25/hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I began working as a campus supervisor right after high school. Over the years I worked in after-school programs, as in Instructional Aid in general education and special education classrooms. After subtitute teaching for 3 years, I went received my Education Specialist teaching credential and began an internship.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of students K-12th grades, but I have most of my experience in Special Education - Learning disabilities.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I have worked 16 years at the elementary school level and I will begin the next school year teaching at the middle school level.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would advise the student to make sure the student/teacher relationship is compatible, that the expectations and outcomes are discussed and agreed upon, and that both work together on the common goal of academic success.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
They should prioritize the needs. They should know the main reason for needing a tutor, and be specific on they think need to work on. Be ready to possibly start at the beginning to build up skills that the student is lacking.
