About

I've had extensive experience working with students, parents and professors of all ages. I coach math classes at a local community college where I lead sessions for students that struggle with math. I've also worked with all types of students with learning disabilites as well as Deaf and hard of hearing students.

Here is my youtube channel where you can see some of my work: www.southbaymathtutor.com

Watching students succeed after they have initially struggled with a problem. I like to watch them overcome their challenges and realize that they have it in themselves to succeed.

We have been working with John now for the past two years and have been very pleased with his tutoring services. Prior to John our Son struggled understanding and completing his math assignments and was a C Student. John has helped our Son to grasp the math concepts he is teaching and our Son now carries an A in math.

We have used John for both of my sons from middle school all through high school.
John finds ways to help you relate to a problem and to break it down into easier understanding. My older son has just graduated high school with Math being one of his highest scoring subjects.

John goes into a lot of depth when working out problems and is a big help with all types of math. Since I started working with him I have been getting progressively better and the sessions have developed my math skills a lot.

    John is --
a good listener; creates examples relevant to my daughters interests; sense of humor; personable; reliable; knowledgeable; creative; experienced with adapting and explaining content to individuals with different learning styles and abilities. My daughter has enjoyed working with him regarding American Sign language, math concepts, or practical finance and personal safety concepts either in person or over Zoom. Highly Recommended!

    Frequently asked questions

I like to get a feel for what their needs are to see if we would be a good fit. Then we look at preferences as to when to meet and where and discuss payment.

I have coached math classes at El Camino College for over ten years. i also have degrees in American Sign Language Interpreting, Spanish and Speech Communication.

I can vary from client but I generally charge $40 an hour for my services.

I've done this all my life. I trained new employees when I worked in corporate America and I taught martial arts some years back as well. It's just always been something that seems to be a good fit for me.

I've worked with all types of students ranging from kids as young as 5 years old to adults. Many of the students I work with are in high school and college and and many have learning disabilities.  I'm fairly fluent in American Sign Language and I have worked with a number of Deaf and hard of hearing students through the years.

I love volunteering to teach the free American Sign Language Class that I teach in Lomita. You can learn about it here on www.southbayaslchat.com

Before you hire a tutor ask yourself if you have really put in the time and effort it takes to be successful in your class. Do you really need a tutor? A tutor can help guide you in the right direction, but if you aren't putting effort to succeed in your class, then a tutor can be a waste of time and money.  Are you setting aside time on a regular basis to succeed in your class? I'd also suggest that whenever possible read sections in whatever class materials you have ahead of time, before your teacher lectures you. In that way it can be easier to understand what you are trying to learn.

How serious am I about succeeding?

Am I putting in a sufficient amount of time into this class?

Am I making an honest attempt at word that is assigned in class?

After I find a good tutor am I going to continue to work hard in my class? (Many people think that a tutor replaces study time, but it really doesn't)
