About
NOTE: Since I pay for each potential request I reply to, I may not respond if I am not a good fit for you (student age, subject matter, etc.). I don't mean to seem rude, but it's Tutors.com's policy that we pay for each reply. Thank you for your understanding.
I am a reading and writing specialist.
While I do tutor standardized test prep (SAT, ACT, etc.) and can improve your student's skills, I only tutor the verbal sections. I believe it pays to hire specialists. Any tutor who says he or she tutors the "whole" test is going to be weaker in one of the areas and will probably switch from section to section each session, anyway. Better just to hire two specialists who are strong in their respective areas. You'll pay the same amount and you'll get better results.
I have been a high school English teacher for 30 years, and I have been a private tutor for over 10. I am also a published author of two non-fiction books.
I teach skills, strategies, and approaches, but mostly, I teach confidence. I find that that's what most students REALLY need.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks.
Dan
I love watching the light go on in a student's mind and eyes when they finally "get" a concept they've been struggling with.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I typically start by asking for a writing sample from the student. I use the writing sample to assess skill level (i.e. strengths and areas for improvement). Then I get to the know the student during the first session before we begin to establish a positive rapport. If the student and parent feels that we are a good fit, we go from there and schedule further sessions. I believe that the student MUST feel that the tutor is the right tutor or EVERYONE is wasting his or her time.
