Hyland Writing Tutoring

About

Although I'm only seventeen years old, I graduated high school when I was sixteen and am currently a sophomore at Antelope Valley College. I'm enrolled in full-time classes and I also am a Writing Tutor for AVC. Currently, I tutor English, history, psychology, and communications/speech classes. At AVC, I also participate in the Honors Program and have maintained a 4.0 GPA during my entire college career. Another thing that makes me stand out is that I'm very well-versed in using technology to tutor students, and I respond quickly to text messages and emails.

Frequently asked questions

My process is to first establish a personal connection with the tutee and make them feel comfortable while working with me. Then, the tutee and I will identify the areas in which they are struggling and need help with. Each session will be broken down so that the tutee and I can work on each area in which they are struggling. After the session, the tutee will be able to summarize what they learned and what they need to work on for the next session.

I have been an English tutor at AVC since August 2020. I do embedded tutoring in various English classes, as well as individual tutoring for students that need help. I took a class specifically designed for tutoring (LAC100 at AVC), and passed with an A+. I also received the first level of my CRLA (College Reading and Learning Association) certification, which is an internationally recognized organization.

Pricing depends on the student, their situation, the class/ subject that the student needs help with, the length of the tutoring session, and the student's age.

I was referred to be a tutor by my communications tutor during the 2020 summer session at AVC. I applied to be a tutor and was hired a week later.

AVC has a very diverse student body, so I have worked with several types of students. I'm used to working with students of different races, religions, ages, skill levels, English comprehension levels, and genders. I also have experience working with students who are deaf, blind, and non-native English speakers.

One of my favorite memories that I've made as a tutor has been when I worked with a forty-year-old returning college student. We met together two times a week to work on her English 102 essays. It was wonderful to see her writing grow and flourish throughout the semester.
