Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Initially I would hold a introductory conversation with them and feel out their style and strengths and weaknesses. I usually like to connect with them on common ground in order to better help in teaching them the material.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a PhD in Genetics and a B.S. in Biochemistry. I understand Chemistry and Biology at a detailed level with 10 years of academic training and 5 years of industry application experience.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I don't have a standard pricing system for lessons
How did you get started teaching?
I first like to understand the student and sense their concerns/weaknesses and self-concious behavior. This is done through a series of introductory conversations which hopefully let's them be comfortable to ask questions. This helps in not overwhelming and encourages dialogue. Once there is a little bit of dialogue then the learning can begin!
What types of students have you worked with?
I was a Teaching Assistant in graduate school for 6 years, running lectures, discussions, and question/answer sessions - these were college-level and graduate-level students
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently tutored a 14 year old boy on the basic understanding of chemistry and found this to be a very successful story. Caleb didn't have any learning disabilities and was just looking to learn Chemistry lessons he missed in class. After getting to know Caleb, we looked at the course material and walked through it week by week. Caleb performed well in the class (A-) and will hopefully be our next Nobel Laureate.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a tutor you are comfortable being around! And ask away! DO NOT hire me if you don't trust me!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
1. Inquire about my background
2. Ask me anything you want, let's initially chat to get to know each other
3. I believe that you can come to me with a question in any form (mature/well thought out or immature and not well thought out) and we can re-formulate it together or walk-through it together
