I Got This Tutoring
About
I love to help children and young adults feel confident about their ability to express themselves in English and improve their language skills. A strong foundation in English is a powerful lifelong tool for communication that can help anyone be successful in the career of their choice. I am proud to be contributing at an early age to a child's future in such a significant way. I have taught second grade and also assisted a first grade teacher, working with children on reading and math skills. At the high school level I have helped write and edit many college application essays.
I am very intuitive about people and tend to have a sense what works best for each person. I let the child or young adult guide the process so that they feel it is their work, not mine. I ask questions to stimulate thinking and am a very patient listener. I do not expect everything to fall into place the first time and understand that learning is different for everyone. At the end of the day it needs to be a finished product the child or young adult feels a sense of pride about.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to get acquainted first so the student feels at ease so I would begin with some questions to the student about what they are feeling good about in their subject and what they would like to improve. I would like them to be part of the goal setting process so they take ownership of their own progress. I then talk about how we might break up the work into one hour sessions and ask if this sounds ok with them. All along the way I pace the process according to how fast they are learning, their attention level and how they are feeling about the session. At the end I check in with them to ask how it went and get their feedback so we can improve things for the next session, set new goals, etc.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a former second grade teacher and I assisted in a first grade classroom with reading and math skills. For older students I am a graduate of UC Berkeley with a BA in English with extensive experience in writing and editing. In many years in my career as a professional fundraiser I published 3 articles in a professional international journal and edited all materials in our office. I helped write and edit 10 essays for a high school senior's college applications.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
