David Pernick Tutoring
About
I've been teaching and tutoring in some capacity for over six years. Through all of these experiences, I've experienced the gamut of student profiles - from a boy who thought he couldn't make it through US History to a girl who hoped to push her 700 in SAT Math as close to an 800 as possible. Working across a wide range of subjects in test prep and regular academic tutoring has given me greater insight onto teaching as a whole. It's allowed me to more effectively gauge student progress in real time and recognize which methods are resonating.
Middle school and high school are such uncertain times for students. There's so little that they have control of and so much that serves to overwhelm them. It makes me happy to work with them to reduce some of this anxiety and make them recognize that they can make it over what seems like a brick wall. I focus on making sure that they'll be able to ultimately do this work without me rather than dictating everything. Seeing them thrive in in-class settings make both of us recognize that they have that ability in them.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Part of this is spending adequate time gauging what they're struggling with down to the type of question. But part of this is also getting a sense of who they are, what interests them and what their current motivations are. These are the things upon which we can build rapport and organically drive their desire to move forward.
