About

As a Ph.D. student in English Literature at UC Irvine, I have dedicated my life to the love and teaching of literature, writing, and reading. Part of my coursework is an intensive study of pedagogy, so I have gained an appreciation for the process of teaching, learning, and understanding the study of English language and literature. While attending Wesleyan University, I received an award for fiction writing, an award for academic writing, and was awarded high honors on my senior thesis. I worked as an editor for Stethoscope Press (the undergraduate imprint of Wesleyan University Press), and have extensive editing and copyediting experience. Until moving to Long Beach to attend graduate school, I volunteered with the college application essay boot camp at 826 Valencia, a charitable organization that helps underprivileged youth reach their full academic and creative potential.

When I was in high school, I struggled with math. I had to attend weekly tutoring sessions to raise my grade in Calculus, so I have personal experience with how daunting, challenging, and straight-up boring some tutoring can be! My tutoring philosophy grew out of these experiences. Learning, especially in the humanities, should be collaborative. A shared experience between teacher and student, guided by my knowledge, but tailored to each student's unique passion and interest, is the best approach to not only raise a student's grade but impart a lifelong love of reading. I also genuinely love teenagers! I have two younger siblings who are 18 and 16 and I am constantly amazed by their and their friends' creativity and drive. With attentive guidance and prompting, I have found that every teen and preteen has a profound capacity for empathy and imagination that helps them excel at the humanities.

Frequently asked questions

My first step is to talk to you about your child. I want to get a sense of both their academic challenges that have led you to seek tutoring and of their strengths and skills. This could be a conversation on the phone, via email, or over coffee. If you decide you want to work with me, I will then ask for you to send me some of your child's past writing assignments so that I can get a sense of where their writing and critical thinking skills excel, and where they need assistance and improvement. In my first session with your child, I like to spend a little time at the start of the lesson getting to know them and talking about what they perceive as their barriers to their humanities education and their strengths either inside or outside of academic life. After that, we will get down to business! Ideally, we will work on a homework assignment, but I can also provide writing, reading, and critical thinking prompts.

I received my BA from Wesleyan University and am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in English at UC Irvine. I am studying pedagogy this year and will begin work as a professor of rhetoric and composition this Fall.

My pricing varies per your child's needs. For weekly homework tutoring sessions, I charge $60 an hour. For school and college application essay editing, I charge my tutoring rate for in-person brainstorming and writing help and $30 an hour for ate-home editing and copy-editing.

Recently, I went to Crystal Cove for the first time. My partner and I spent an afternoon tide-pooling, picnicking, and reading. There is nothing better than lying on a blanket, reading The Great Gatsby, and listening to the waves crash on the beach!

A student should ask these questions:

1. What is my favorite part of school?

2. What is my least favorite part of school?

3. Who is my favorite teacher? What do they do that helps me learn?

4. What is my proudest accomplishment?

5. How can I best ask for help so that I get the help that I need?
