Mandarin Me

About

I am a private Chinese Mandarin tutor with over eight years of experience tutoring both Chinese and English. After spending much of my education and career in Mainland China, I have acquired a degree in Teaching Chinese as well as obtained an HSK 6 certificate. I absolutely love Chinese language, culture, and history, and that passion is something I hope to pass on to my students.

"A journey of a thousand miles, begins with one step" Lao Tzu

I love watching my students flourish and grow in their Chinese studies. Chinese is the number one most commonly spoken language in the world and is rooted in a rich, colorful, and excited culture. I love not only to teach students the Chinese spoken language, but to share with them the people and history that make the Chinese language so special. I am here to help you on your journey to learning pinyin (拼音), chinese characters (汉字), and hopefully on to becoming a fluent Chinese speaker!

    Frequently asked questions

First I like to beging by assessing the student's Chinese level. For many students, they might have already studied pinyin, but are having trouble transitioning to characters. So to begin, it's good for me to get to know the level of the student and then move on from there.

After assessing the student's level, then I can begin preparing the coursework or lesson plan that we'll be using. Some students want to go through a textbook to thoroughly learn the language, others may want to just practice speaking with me in order to reenforce what they learned in school.

Finally after choosing the method in which the student wants to learn, then we can begin the initial lessons. Throughout our lessons, I will be providing feedback, homework, or any other guidance as the student or parents see fit.

I have received my bachelor's degree in Teaching Chinese, completed a 40+ hour Chinese teaching internship at a well-known university in China, as well as obtained my HSK and HSKK certificates.

I began teaching abroad many years ago, and after obtaining my degree in Teaching Chinese is when I began my work as a private Chinese tutor.

I have worked with students from various backgrounds and ages. My degree is specifically aimed towards teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages, which includes levels beginner to advanced.

Recently I began teaching Chinese to a young American man, looking to travel to China for work. After a couple months of lessons, he has drastically improved in his spoken Chinese, specifically his tones and pronunciation. I am so proud of him and it has encouraged me even more in my passion for teaching Chinese.

I would suggest students to find a tutor that fits their Chinese language goals. As a native English teacher, I work best with students struggling to become fluent in Chinese. For many of my students, they might have issues in transitioning from pinyin to characters. That's where I step in so that I can help you to understand Chinese from a native English speaker's viewpoint and help them take their Chinese to the next level.

The two main things I want my students to think through before beginning is: what is your reason for wanting to study Chinese and what is your goal for studying Chinese.
