Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Typically I prefer to meet with the student and parents to determine how the student can succeed. If possible, I like to look at previous test scores and writing samples so that I can assess strengths and needs of each student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been teaching in the classroom for 8 years. I have taught AP Biology (4 years), Biology (8 years), Chemistry (2 years), 8th Grade Science (2 years), 6th grade science (3 years); 7th Grade Science (2 years). In addition, I have tutored on and off for years since college.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My rate is $40 per hour for individual students and I am available for group lessons (2-5 students for $50 per hour). Minium of half-hour session and flexible scheduling available.
How did you get started teaching?
My pathway to teaching was a little unconventional. While getting my Biology degree in college, I tutored math and science to high school students. This led me to become a Education Volunteer with the Peace Corps in Tanzania Africa after college for two years teaching Biology in a local school. Through this experience I was able to get my credential and return to teach in Southern CA. I have been in the classroom teaching all levels of science to ages 11-18 for 8 years since then and my knowledge and passion have only grown!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with ages 11-18 in all levels of science, emphasizing life science and chemistry. I have worked with a diverse group of students and have experience with advanced students (Honors & AP), students with IEPs and accommodations, English Learners, and many more. Students cannot be boxed and each has a unique strengths & learning style. I seek to discover these and create an supportive environment that works that can increase critical skills necessary to academic success.
