Commuter Tutor
About
I am a credentialed teacher with 17 years of classroom teaching. I have taught and been extensively trained in Orton Gillingham, Guided Reading, as well as Readers and Writers Workshop.
Shortly after my first session with a student I conduct some low pressure assessments to help me understand what the student's strengths and weaknesses are. Then I work with him or her to set short and long term goals so that the student can track their progress. I have found that immediate and appropriate feedback provides a great incentive to keep going.
I love tutoring because I get to work one on one with students. This allows me to adapt my methods to each student's particular needs. Even after 17 years of teaching, I never tire of seeing the light in students eyes when they master a new idea or concept!

Describe a recent event you are fond of.
As a reading specialist, I read Because of Winn Dixie with a small group of at risk fifth graders. I had to overcome some resistance from the boys in the group because the main character in the book is a girl. However, I persisted and won the boys over. To this day, two of the boys name Because of Winn Dixie as the book that made them love reading.
