Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The parent contacts me first for a 15-minute free consultation. We will discuss their student's strengths and weaknesses. I will then schedule the student's first day! Not only will we go over homework assigned by the school, but we will also read a book outside of school, practice vocabulary using flashcards (repetitively), have creative writing prompts, and any other engagement for the student. I ask questions to my students because I love hearing how their thought processes their answers.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have my bachelor's in Sociology and Criminal Justice. I have always geared myself towards English since I was a child. During college, I to wrote student's thesis papers as well as any other papers they had a hard time with. I have always tutored kids in my family as well, in any subject. I am trained to develop their study habits, besides just "giving them the answer"
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My pricing is as goes: $40/hour.
I tutor students K-2 for 1 hour, and students 3rd grade and beyond for 2 hours.
How did you get started teaching?
I have five younger siblings. Besides babysitting, growing up I always helped them out with their homework. As I got older, I then started volunteering at after-school programs where I continued tutoring students. I took a break once I started college but once the pandemic hit I needed another source of income. So I thought to myself, "Why not do something I enjoy?"
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from grades K-12. My students are awesome! If anything, I feel like they are teaching me at times.
The majority of my students are in elementary school. That is a great time for a student to be tutored because we will both assist with building their learning foundation. Let's not forget that teachers do not teach students how to learn (especially in their own style). Some students are not able to learn by sitting all day at a computer screen, or even class. That is the majority of the kind of students I help.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Always ask questions! Any comments or concerns as well because I am here to help. There is no such thing as a dumb question.
However I am very repetitive, and that is what it takes for a student to retain the subject. So I am okay with the frustration at times. We are here to work together. You will see a massive improvement from your student.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
A student does not have to think through before asking their teachers about their needs. That will definitely make them feel overwhelmed. There is no such thing as a dumb question.
