Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
For each new student and new lesson, I prioritize mastering the curriculum in advance. This involves typically 2-3 hours of pre-work before each lesson. Through this mastery, I am able to walk each student step by step through their coursework.
When I work with a new student, I take time to understand what the parent's and student's goals and concerns are. I like to offer an upfront free trial lesson to have this conversation and so students can experience working with me.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a private mathematics tutor for the last 5 years. Prior to this, I held roles as an assistant math teacher at Consumes River Community College and was a 6th grade assistant teacher at Carroll Elementary School.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Yes. My standard pricing is $30-$35 per hour. For longer term commitments, I'm happy to discuss discounted pricing models.
How did you get started teaching?
I first worked as an assistants teacher for the Elk Grove Unified School District. For the past 5 years I have been a private tutor.
What types of students have you worked with?
My students are mostly middle schoolers and high schoolers. They are looking to strengthen their math skills to achieve better grades and build a stronger foundation.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
My 3rd grader student said "Shobhna, I uses to be scared of math tests but now I'm excited for them"
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The teacher should be able to devote time to firstly review all material in advance and secondly answer any questions that may arise.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Please review your assignments in advance and come prepared with specific questions.
