Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, we talk! I ask the students about their lives, their likes and their dislikes. I also tell the students about myself. It is important to have good conversation. I then ask them how they feel about school, what their favorite subject is and their least favorite subject. I ask them why they don't like their least favorite subject. I do not give up until they give me a specifc reason for their dislike. This usually tells me most of what I need to know. Most students do not lack capability, they just lack confidence or don't have a love for learning. Based on what the parent has told me I take an assessment of the student's foundational skills and start from there.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I earned a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies, and I have a Multiple Subjects Elementary Teaching Credential. I also have a Masters of Curriculum in Elementary Education. I have 35 years of classroom teaching experience teaching grades K-6 and six years of tutoring experience at the elementary and college level. I was a writing mentor for the teachers in my district and wrote curriculum that was implemented in the classroom.
