Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I want a student to feel comfortable with me, as I will be someone who will spend time one-on-one with them, so I want them to feel that they can discuss their concerns with me.
Then, I will assess for issues or skills that need strengthening. I will discuss my expectations of behavior and the goals that we will share in getting the student to achieve academic success.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm a graduate of Humboldt State University. I have 2 Bachelor's degrees, Psychology and Multiple Subjects, commonly known as elementary education. I have additional supplementary authorizations in English, allowing me to teach up to 12th grade in that subject, and the CLAD authorization, which allows me to teach English as a second language. I have over 20 years of experience utilizing these degrees as a teacher and tutor.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My tutoring fees start at $45 (teaching skills, assisting with homework, etc.)per 60 minute session.
I am open to working for longer time frames or with more than one student. My fees change dependent on length of time, the number of students and degree of difference between students.
Students requiring more than 15 miles of travel will also incur a $5+ travel fee .
How did you get started teaching?
Every August my mother would ask what I wanted to be when I grew up. By the time I was in 9th grade, I knew I wanted to work with children. By the end of 9th grade I realized that I would be happiest working with children to help them understand academics and to use that knowledge beyond the classroom. The rest, as they say, is history.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from kinder through 12th grade in most subjects, and with students who are just learning English for the 1st time. Some students were accelerated learners and others were overcoming academic challenges. In all cases, I have endeavored to make learning interesting and strengthen the student's self confidence.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
This is a tough question due to the broad nature of the inquiry.
Any time a student's face lights up with the knowledge that they understand a new concept, become aware of their own abilities and their confidence grows are the times I am most fond of.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure this teacher is well spoken, knowledgeable and that you feel comfortable in this person's presence.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Can you adequately describe your concern?
Is this the appropriate teacher to ask?
Can you accept that a teacher may not have the answer? Therefore, you must continue to search for information.p>
