Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
It's important for me to spend some time getting to know my students, assessing their current learning levels, setting expectations and norms, and making a connection.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelors degree and am certified to teach in the state of California. I have 7 years of teaching experience.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$40-60/hour
How did you get started teaching?
I realized I wanted to teach during my junior year of college because I loved my job as an after school tutor at a middle school. I hadn't originally chosen education as my major, so I began taking education electives and observing in classrooms while finishing my fashion degree. After I earned my bachelors degree, I started substitute teaching during the days and taking classes at night to become certified. I am so glad I eventually found the perfect career for me - I love teaching, especially small groups and one-on-one.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students of varying ages, but prefer to work with middle and high school students. I have also worked with many students with autism, dyslexia, and IEPs.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Recently I was able to read and discuss "A Christmas Carol" with an eighth grade homeschooled student, and then attend the play with her and her mom. It was exciting to see all the connections she was making between the novel and the performance, and I felt honored to be invited to spend time with her and her family beyond our normally scheduled tutoring sessions.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher that you can connect with, feel comfortable with, and makes learning exciting.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are my goals for the future? What can I do now to ensure I can meet those goals? What do I need in order to be successful? What learning methods have worked best for me in the past?
