How did you get started teaching?
I worked as a paid mentor for approximately 8-10 hours per week during my sophomore, junior, and a part of senior year at UC San Diego. A program funded by the National Science Foundation, Sustaining Interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Research in Society (SISTERS) was an afterschool class taught by mentors for fifth and sixth grade girls from low-income families. As mentors, we were responsible for creating hands-on science experiments and lessons that would provide students with a positive experience that fosters their interest and representation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This job was meaningful, as it granted me the opportunity to share my own experiences and pride in being a woman in STEM and emphasize the importance of education for the generation following mine.
In addition, I was also hired by UCSD's Biology Department to work as a Teacher's Assistant for a lower division biology course for one quarter. I was responsible for leading my own discussion sessions every week for an hour, holding office hours for any questions or tutoring, creating practice problems, and grading midterm and final exams. This experience taught me how to work with students at the college-level.
In my post-baccalaureate year, I worked for 5-6 months as an Applied Behavior Analyst to help younger students afflicted with Autism Spectrum Disorder. I was teaching fundamental elementary curriculum including vocabulary, addition/subtraction, and reading as well as social and verbal skills for communicating. I learned the importance of reinforcements in teaching and how to cater my teaching based on individual needs and abilities.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have most experience with students in grades ranging in elementary to middle school.
I have worked with college students at UC San Diego as a Teacher's Assistant for the Biology Department.
