I am 46 years old, I have been teaching and tutoring for 13 years now and it's truly been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My typical process for working with a new student is to first of all connect with the student by learning the maximum about the student's need and level to get a good assessment on how to better suggest our tutoring sessions.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Bachelor's degree with teaching certificate. Have 13 years experience in teching ESL to various age groups from 7 to 77 years old. Both one on one and group sessions, in person and online. Since Covid and the pandemic restrictions, I now only do online tutoring with much success, returning students and referrals.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I like to see everyone get a fair chance to learn the beautiful English language and get help from me in the area of everyone's need. Though I've been told by many that I could charge much more, I choose to only charge $21 per hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I got started teaching right after I graduated. There was an opening for an ESL teacher at the technical college. I loved every minute of it and enjoyed my student's success that I chose to remain in the teaching English field.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students at various levels and special needs. I often work with students needing assistance with their school projects or homework. Some didn't speak any English at all, some were at entry level and some were advanced. Some were simply looking to re-ignite the English flame whether it was for work, move to an English speaking country, to communicate with an English speaking spouse, with emplyees and colleages or for business growth and promotion. I keep the lines of communication open between my students and myself to ensure no matter what their level is, everyone's invidual needs are met.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Once the first lockdown was here, there were quite a few people in panic regarding their studies and how to go about it. Schools were closed with not much of a plan in place. Many turned to online tutoring. Luckily Google meet and Zoom made it possible for online classes on a large scale. Seeing all the faces of my students, happy to connect and be able to continue learning while at the same time welcoming new students in the class from various parts of the world all at once, that was amazing and hugely satisfying!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
My advice to a student looking to hire a teacher in my expertise would be to carefully choose by how you can comfortably connect and communicate openly. That's very important, once this is established then a long successful journey awaits.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I would suggest before talking to teachers about their needs, students should be ready to commit and ask themselves if now is the right time? If it is, go for it! If not now, then make a plan, write down your goals precisely with dates, amount of hours you're available and willing to interact with the teacher and amount of time set aside to do homework or offline practices. Once this is established, you're ready to connect and choose a teacher, share your needs and workout a plan to help you achieve your goals. Remember everyone learns at their own pace, be patient with yourself and believe you can and you will succeed. Where there's a will, there's always a way!
