Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to start with a complimentary orientation session where we discuss what the student is looking to gain from our classes and how best to reach those goals. Once the goals are set for our classes, we then choose the curriculum we'll use, as well as when and how often we'll meet for class.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor's degree in East Asian Studies with a Chinese concentration from UC Irvine and an MBA from Santa Clara University. I'm bilingual and can speak Mandarin Chinese from 5 years living and studying abroad in China. I have extensive teaching experience in a variety of subjects including technology, language, and entrepreneurship.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Each student is different and I discuss this on a case by case basis.
How did you get started teaching?
I lived in China for more than 5 years and I worked as a teacher full time to support my language study and exploration of the country!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all ages, from K-12 students to university students and adults.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I was recently teaching a technology class at a school in Millbrae and when the students got to the classroom that day for our class several of them shouted excitedly, ran over, and hugged me. It was very touching - both because they were excited for our class and had obvious affection for me as a teacher. :-)
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Talk to them before you make a decision, in person, to make sure your personalities are a good fit. This is very important.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are your goals? What motivates you? Motivation needs to come from within to be truly effective, so you need to think what it is you truly want, not what other people want for you.
