Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
After getting to know the student and ascertaining any deficiencies, we help the learner up to present standards and then strive to go beyond, according to the student's abilities.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
We offer our mentors special training in our teaching methods. All are individually matched with students for whom it is thought they will have the best fit.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Our basic price is $50 per hour, however we are able to compromise when the family's circumstances do not allow for that. We are flexible!
How did you get started teaching?
We have built our school and tutoring services gradually over the past 30 years. It was started as a service helping homeschool families. Now we work with students from all types of schooling environments.
What types of students have you worked with?
We have worked with students who are gifted and those who are slower learners. We have also successfully worked with autistic children, those with learning disabilities, and those who find themselves behind and need to catch up. Our philosophy is that every child should have an education based on his/her abilities, interests and goals
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
One of my favorite events is our book give-away program event. Yearly, we are able, through a grant, to give books to needy children in several states. I love to attend these events and see the smiling faces of children receiving, for some, their first book. I love to see kids reading.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a tutor who connects with the child. The mentor should be interested in the total child, not just in the current subject. This is especially important for younger children who might not see the need for certain subject matter. An effective mentor can connect any subject with something that interests the student and help the student see how interconnected all subjects are.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Will the tutor have an interest in my overall needs?
While any subject is important by itself, how does it relate to other subjects and to the world in which we live?
Is the tutor flexible in terms of hours, days etc.?
Is the tutor creative in his/her approach to the subject I am learning?
