What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The most important first step is gauging how the student perceives the chemical field, and understanding how they think. Once I understand where student's understanding stops, we can begin to probe why these concepts are troubling for them, including prior knowledge gaps.
Then we can go onto new material as needed.
