Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Standard one-on-one tutoring begins at $30/hour, with a minimum 1-hr payment.
Family discounts are offered at $5 per person per hour for sessions with 2 or more students at a time (i.e. $55/hour for 2 students, $80/hour for 3 students).
Equivalent compensation is expected for any and all materials that are damaged or destroyed.
How did you get started teaching?
I've always had a great fondness for children, and I've found through many life experiences that I'm able to connect with students in a multitude of ways that other adults/educators may not have the creativity to discover on their own, particularly when it comes to special education.
What types of students have you worked with?
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Finding the right person to learn from is as important a task as finding the right doctor or therapist: without the ability to communicate effectively or understand one another's viewpoints, not much progress can be made. The best teachers are those who make learning interesting as opposed to a dreaded task, and he or she should be a person that students can look up to and speak freely with. Find someone who's willing to work with you rather than demanding that work be done.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Be specific when asking for help. Teachers and tutors alike love to help their students learn, but a statement such as, "I need help with math," is far less-likely to communicate your needs than a clearer request. Instead, reflect on what you struggle with the most, and offer questions such as, "I understand how to calculate the slope of a line, but I'm not sure how to graph it after that. Can you please help me learn how?"
