Frequently asked questions

I like to spend time getting to know a student in order to discover where their true strengths and struggles lie. I don't believe there's any one teaching method that perfectly suits all learners alike, although I do my best to make every lesson as enjoyable as possible. The majority of my work uses a variety of hands-on materials and activities as well as an approach that generally asks students to reach conclusions on their own rather than having information handed down. Particularly in all branches of mathematics, I greatly value true depth of understanding over formula memorization. I expect a good deal of parental/family communication when it comes to long-term goal planning and progress tracking when it comes to students younger than teens, whereas teens and adults often have more autonomy in verbalizing what they need or want.

I graduated from PCC at the end of 2021 with associate degrees in all of the following subjects:

Anthropology

Child Development

Child & Adolescent Development

Early Childhood Education

Humanities

Linguistics

Natural Sciences

Social & Behavioral Sciences

In 2019, I received Honors for Superior Achievement in Anthropology, and I was the recipient of a special Certificate of Achievement from PCC's Teacher Preparation Program in 2022.

I've worked professionally in a private preschool setting with children ages 2-5 years as well as an Early Childhood Education Center with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.

I have been working in the field of early childhood education since 2016 and as a private tutor for students of all ages since 2018, including some with diagnoses of autism, ADHD, and Down syndrome.

I am currently attending Arizona Christian University in pursuit of a bachelor's in Secondary Education with a Focus in Mathematics.

Standard one-on-one tutoring begins at $30/hour, with a minimum 1-hr payment.

Family discounts are offered at $5 per person per hour for sessions with 2 or more students at a time (i.e. $55/hour for 2 students, $80/hour for 3 students).

Equivalent compensation is expected for any and all materials that are damaged or destroyed.

I've always had a great fondness for children, and I've found through many life experiences that I'm able to connect with students in a multitude of ways that other adults/educators may not have the creativity to discover on their own, particularly when it comes to special education.

I have worked with a wide variety of people, all the way from infant and toddler classrooms through adult college students. My students have all had a range of family and cultural backgrounds as well as a unique set of circumstance that brings them to tutoring, sometimes including substantial delays, diagnosed disabilities, and/or already-established IEP/504 plans. I pride myself on being attuned to each person's needs and goals in order to offer my help as fully as possible.

Finding the right person to learn from is as important a task as finding the right doctor or therapist: without the ability to communicate effectively or understand one another's viewpoints, not much progress can be made.  The best teachers are those who make learning interesting as opposed to a dreaded task, and he or she should be a person that students can look up to and speak freely with.  Find someone who's willing to work with you rather than demanding that work be done.

Be specific when asking for help.  Teachers and tutors alike love to help their students learn, but a statement such as, "I need help with math," is far less-likely to communicate your needs than a clearer request.  Instead, reflect on what you struggle with the most, and offer questions such as, "I understand how to calculate the slope of a line, but I'm not sure how to graph it after that.  Can you please help me learn how?"
