Salma’s Tutoring
About
I feel lucky to work in a field that I love and am passionate about. I think education is so important and it's really tough on a student when they're struggling in a subject. I've been an english tutor for over ten years. I have my degree in english and writing. I work with students of all ages from pre k through college. I specialize in reading, reading comprehension, writing, grammar, phonics,spelling/vocab, study and organizational skills. If a student needs supplemental tutoring, I design my own curriculum to best fit the student's needs. I can also help with homework. If an assessment is needed, I can do that before tutoring begins. I also tutor in AP English, AP Language and Composition, AP Literature, and U.S. History/AP U.S. History. As well as SAT/ACT Grammar and Reading Comprehension. I also work with students on their college admissions essays.
I think it's not only important to teach content, but also to encourage and boost a student's self esteem that is struggling in a subject. I can really empathize with what they're going through and I like to instill confidence in my students. I think every student learns differently and as a tutor I like to observe how a student learns and teach them in a way that is best suited for their learning style. When you work with a student one on one you can really spend time on their individual challenges, so that they may improve. Thank you for taking the time to read about me. I enjoy my work very much because I'm passionate about education. I have seen what it's like for students that are struggling and it really hurts their self esteem. I like helping them improve and feel better about themselves.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Learning how my students learn and coming up with ways to teach them that best fit with the their learning style. I have a lot of empathy and patience for students that are finding a subject(s) challenging. Of course content is very important but just as important so is giving my students a lot of praise. When a student is struggling with a subject, he/she feels less confident. I think it's just as valuable to raise their confidence level as it is for them to understand the subject.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a degree in english and writing. I've been an english tutor for over ten years. I also worked for ten years at The Princeton Review as an SAT and ACT tutor. I also have plenty of experience helping students with their college admissions essays.

I've worked with students from pre k through college. I’ve worked with students with various learning disabilities as well.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A recent event that I’m fond of is reading to my niece. She’s 10 months and loves when I read to her. I’m trying to teach her to say book as her first word.
Another recent event that I'm fond of is I worked with a student that struggled in writing and spelling. We worked together for about two years in total and by the end of that time he had not only caught up to his grade level, but was writing at a grade level above his. I was so proud of him!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I think it's important that the tutor asks questions to really understand what is challenging to the student. How they did the year before and how they are doing now. I think it's important that the tutor is patient and empathetic.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What is personally challenging to you? What areas would you like to improve? Are you feeling down about yourself because of this? What are your study habits? Are you organized? It's amazing how much a student can improve just by having the right organizational and study habits.
