    Frequently asked questions

I have not yet tutored a student on this site, though I have worked with many students over the years. In the beginning, I would need to know the student's needs and interests. I would then work up a plan for both the student and parent to review to make sure that it seems reasonable to them.

I have been in education for more than 30 years - as a teacher, an author, and a curriculum developer. I'm recently retired and would like to continue working with students. That's why I have signed up for Tutors. com.

I believe that $50.00 an hour is a fair price, particularly given the fact that one hour of teaching requires an hour of preparation. I am, however, willing to start at $45.00 an hour for a minimum of two hours a week. I'm also willing to drop that to $40.00 an hour for four or more hours a week.

I have been teaching since I graduated college. I began teaching at the American School of Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain. I then taught in Worcester, MA. After 8 years of classroom teaching, I spent years in educational publishing (Houghton Mifflin, Scholastic, Silver Burdett Ginn, Open Court) as an Editorial Director and VP and Publisher. Through this position, I worked with leading educational authors and field tested curriculum across the country with teachers and students in a variety of school districts.

I have also authored a program for developing high-level academic vocabulary through discussions of fine art and real-world photos. The program is called Discussions4Learning. You can learn more about it at Discussions4Learning.com.

I have worked with every type of student, from extremely advanced students to those who have had reading challenges. I have also worked with a range of ages. I have never worked with a student who did not have the ability to improve and succeed.

Some students need extra help outside of the regular classroom. As long as a student is willing to make an effort, I will be there to support them, and to make sure that they feel confident about their growth.

Learning should be fun and engaging. Sometimes students are simply not challenged enough in the school setting.

Ultimately, however, each student has his or her unique needs, talents, interests, and challenges.
