About

I am passionate about the subjects I teach and I like to think this passion makes learning fun for students. I have been tutoring for 7 years and it is something I love to do. I have helped many satisfied pupils achieve their academic goals from grade school students to people in medical school. My favorite subjects to tutor are essay writing and organic chemistry.

Personal achievements include the following.

I have placed second in a Statewide mathematics competition, I have always been in the top 3% of the classes I have taken, I scored in the 98th percentile on the American chemical societies standardized organic chemistry exam, and have worked in research labs on advances in the pharmaceutical industry. I am extremely patient, friendly, open-minded and nonjudgemental.

I hope I get to meet you and I can't wait to get started.

Regards and well wishes,

Matt

    Frequently asked questions

On first meeting a student I ask for a sample of what they are currently working on in a specific class as well as what book they are using. then I quickly talk with them about their goals and where they feel like they need the most help. this is so I can make sure we use our time as wisely as possible. then we get started, working on the students understanding of the subject answering questions helping with homework and assignments, and teaching tricks for concepts on tests.

I have been through a tutor training program and have been tutoring for years privately and for institutions. I also have a degree in chemistry and a deep understanding of many subjects as well as the art of studying.

I usually charge $35 an hour but have always had a sliding scale available for people in need and have been known to go as low as $20 per hour for students who are on financial aid and working or in similar situations.

I was asked, by the school I was enrolled in, to become a tutor by the chemistry department. They had noticed I had a firm grasp on the topics people struggle with. Once I started I fell in love with helping people understand difficult subjects. To see the "lightbulb go on" in someone you are helping or to watch them begin to like the subject you are tutoring because they understand it and are doing well is extremely rewarding.

I have had students from grade school ESL students to students in medical school and everyone in between.

I am fond of many recent scientific discoveries.

I would advise the student to identify if the tutor can explain topics in more than one way, using multiple examples and has a conceptual, qualitative understanding of the subject, as well as the ability to apply it quantitatively i.e., do the math required to solve problems involving specific amounts.

How much time am I willing to devote to the subject in tutoring sessions as well as outside study time?

What have I tried already to improve my grade? Did it help?

Have I noticed a pattern in the areas in which I need help? Is it just the "word problems"?

Do I not understand the labs we have done?

Have I received low scores on my essays?

Is it everything from one chapter I have struggled with or is it more general?

Do I think I have missed a concept from previous classes that we are now revisiting?

Make a list of these things as well as questions that came up while in class or studying.
