About

I try to make my sessions as simple and enjoyable as possible. I'm very patient and will never make a student feel bad for not understanding a concept or taking a long time to understand something new.

I love being able to simplify concepts for students and see them go from being very frustrated and confused to genuinely enjoying their learning.

The most rewarding part of my work, though, is when I'm able to help a student on a more personal level. I always strive to get to know my students as much as I can while I'm teaching, so if they're experiencing bullying at school, self-esteem issues related to their academic performence, or anything like that, I will know and try to help and encourage them as much as possible.

Frequently asked questions

Get to know them a bit first. I want them to feel comfortable working with me and I want to be able to relate to them on more than an academic level.

After that, I have them give me some background on what they're studying and what they've struggled with in that subject. If they come with a specific assignment/problem, I'll often have them walk me through what they've done so far so I can assess where they're having difficulties. That also helps me understand their thought process and learning style so I can adjust my own approach.

I have an Associates of Science in Chemistry, so I am extremely well versed in all types of math up to and including calculus III and differential equations.

I also have over two years of experiece tutoring math, both with college students (where I tutored technical math) and k-12.

I also tutored on a volunteer basis at my first college for classmates. That instruction was over a wide variety of subjects, including chemistry, math, english, economics, and more.

I tend to charge per hour, but it may vary some depending on the length of the session and other factors.

My first experience was helping classmates at community college with math, chemistry, etc. on a volunteer basis. That led to an actual job tutoring in the technical math department at that school. That's where I discovered that I really enjoy working with students.

I have worked with a very wide variety of students, from all ages (kindergarteners through 60+ year-olds), different ethnicities and income levels, at-risk, autistic, highly advanced, as well as those far below their grade level.

I had a few junior-high students (one was at-risk and the other was pretty quite and reserved) that would always insist on me being their tutor.

Find someone that will seek out your input. If there's a concept or specific problem you're struggling with, they need to be asking you what parts are confusing you and whether or not the way they are explaining things makes sense.

Some of the most effective tutoring experience I've had are where the students point out which ways of my teaching made sense and which ones didn't work for them. You need a teacher that wants that feedback and cares enough to listen.

Just try to be specific. If you're not understanding a problem, figure out what part you're getting stuck on. Similarly, if you're struggling with a particular set of homework, pick out the individual problems that are the hardest and a good representation of what else is on the assignment, because working through those will give you the tools to finish the others on your own.

You really don't want to be finishing your session and realize you've only been working on one type of problem, or the problems you've focussed on those you may have been able to do on your own.

Going over your work, even just briefly, will make your session much more productive and efficient.
