About
Hello, My name is Karen, and I have a Bachelor of Science in Education from The Ohio State University and a Masters in Education with an Elementary Education emphasis from the University of Dayton. I have also completed an additional 30 semester hours of study in several areas of Elementary Education from The Ohio State University, University of Dayton, and Ashland University. I hold a valid license from the state of Ohio for Kindergarten---Grade 8. I have a special passion for children. Each child is an individual and unique. Consequently, I plan my lessons for each child based on individual needs and treat each child with compassion as I build academic strength and relationship. I address those individual needs through personalized lesson plans to teach to the strengths of the whole child. I am compassionate, kind, and patient. Especially for the younger students I understand that games and fun activities are important to maintain interest as well as short spans of time on each activity. Even for older students we will move from one activity to another to decrease any boredom. I maintain an Ohio License for Grades K--8. My career resume includes 18 years as a classroom teacher where I was also actively involved in the development of individual courses of study at both above and below grade level; 10 years on staff as Coordinator of Children's and Family Ministries for my local church where I worked extensively with children and families of the congregation both one on one and in groups; 8 years as a tutor for students ages K through Grade 9 both in person and online; and 4+ years tutoring international ESL online using Zoom.us. Family is extremely important, and I place value on also building relationships with the family as I work with the student. I also am currently also a professional organizer and include coaching Students in Organizational and Academic Study Skills. I've become aware that many students in middle school, junior high, and high school have not been taught to manage their studies in an organized manner. It is possible for me to work effectively with your student in an online venue using our electronic devices. Online allows me to extensively expand my area of influence. I look forward to having the opportunity to help your student experience much greater success in school either in person or ONLINE. You as the parent are the most important person in your student's life. I would enjoy talking with you to discover how we can best help your child through a team effort. TOGETHER we can bring calm to the heart of your FAMILY. For more information about me and how I can help your student, please, go to my website at www.tutorwithheart.com.
I truly enjoy working one on one with students. I get to know each student and family so that I can work to meet the individual needs of each student.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Meeting with students generally takes place in a convenient library. When meeting with a student for the first time, I request that the parent stay for 15-20 minutes so that we can all get to know each other. I will do some inventory items with the student and some games, especially with younger students. I will question parents as to specific needs of the student if we have not already covered that on the phone. Comfort level of the student and relationship building are important.
