About
Unlike perhaps most tutors, I have a Ph.D. in English. I greatly enjoyed teaching undergraduates and graduate students for eight years at the university level. I now also teach high school students writing and literary analysis. In addition to being a tutor I'm a college counsellor who works with students one-on-one to help them find their voice as they go about beginning the process of selecting and applying to the colleges of their dreams.
Having worked in a university, I understand what college professors want to see in their students' written work. Having taught future high school teachers, I also have a strong sense of what they want from their students. The best part of my job is tailoring plans to individual students. Success should always be accompanied by joy. I've only done my job properly if my students have found joy in their work.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with a new students I share a Google Doc with them so that they can begin writing immediately. Students always know more than they realize about the topic they've been asked to write about. Getting them to write in real time breaks the ice and gives them confidence. Working this way also ensures that at the end of a tutoring session, students have something concrete to build on. Because I've been assisting all along, what they emerge with is at the very least a strong draft. Often what we have at the end of a session is a polished piece of work.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters and Ph.D. in English Literature, so both analyzing and teaching it has become second nature to me. You can't get advanced degrees in English without being a strong writer. And most English degrees require that students teach writing while they are completing their degrees.
